COFFEE and cakes seemed to be on everybody’s lips on Friday morning as people across the area held fundraisers for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.

Two events in Dunmow proved to be very popular, alongside our own coffee morning in our Saffron Walden offices.

Topping the money-making charts were the organisers of the now annual ‘Caf in the Alley’ on Dunmow’s Stortford Road.

Every year the small space to Sweetlands butchers becomes a hive of activity and 2010 was no different as hundreds turned up to buy hot drinks, food, flowers and garden shrubs.

Organiser Claire Reeve was delighted to announce that they had managed to raise a staggering 1400 in just two hours between 10am and noon.

“We had a wonderful turn out,” she said. “Despite such cold and miserable weather we raised a fantastic amount for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“Without doubt the people of Dunmow and the surrounding area are great.”

Many people helped by donating shrubs to be sold off for no more than 4, as a result there are still some left over and available from Sweetlands.

Across the other side of town, Sue Cracknell was hosting her seventh annual coffee morning in a row and welcomed lots of people at the United Reform Church on New Street.

She said: “It is a great cause and this year we have been really busy, we managed to raise just over 450.”

At the Dunmow Broadcast offices is was also a similar story, as people popped in for some homemade cakes, courtesy of Emma Graves from our sales department, and we managed to raise 501, including a huge cheque from one individual for over 450.

Macmillan Cancer Support aims to improve the lives of people affected by cancer, including patients and their families, by providing practical, medical and financial support.

It also pushes for better cancer care by lobbying Government and campaigning across the UK and abroad.

Friday’s flagship event, billed as the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’, is held across the UK with millions joining in to raise money.

Last year 43,000 people registered, raising a total of 7.9 million.
