ESSEX Junior Chess Association is bringing a prestigious squad coaching day to Saffron Walden next month.

The event will take place at Dame Bradbury's School, in Ashdon Road, on February 1 and, although it is by invitation only, will involve a large number of local chess players.

Coaching on the day will be led by British women's player Sabrina Chevannes. Her website is www.sabrinachevannes.com/chess_main.html

Sessions will be focused on the ECF Scheme of Excellence awards at bronze, silver and gold levels, culminating in players sitting the relevant examination. This will also help the Essex selectors in putting their teams together.

Local chess enthusiast and businessman Greg Thompson, of Greg Thompson Financial Services Ltd, is sponsoring the day. He said: "We are delighted to be bringing this event to Saffron Walden and ensuring that junior chess keeps a high profile in this corner of Essex.
