JAZZ music echoed around the halls of Felsted School as pupils welcomed musical rivals from Bishops Stortford College and Haileybury School for a battle of the bands competition.
The adjudicator for the evening was Sam Burgess, a regular member of the house band at Ronnie Scott's famous London Jazz Club in Soho.
A school spokesman said: "Sam gave very useful feedback to each band and in the end, Felsted were pronounced the worthy winners.
"Each band played in turn, and although the three ensembles were very different in terms of size and the amount of instruments in the line-up, each achieved a very high standard which led to an evening of great musical variety and interest."
At the end of the night the musicians from all three bands played together in a mass rendition of American rock and roll number, Louie Louie.
