At the Wheel Meeting held at the September 6 meeting club members welcomed Jill Elms and Debbie Stephens to tell them about Rescu. Uttlesford Rescu is one of president, Brenda Smith's projects for the year. Jill explained that Rescu was formed some 12 years ago by mothers of children with disabilities to provide respite care. Volunteer families were recruited who would look after a child with a disability for a day or sometimes for a night. Eventually it was realised that a play-scheme was needed and a youth group was formed to take care of children and volunteers were invited to help both at Saffron Walden and Dunmow, particularly Sunday mornings. As respite care developed the needs to adults with disabilities was also recognised and Rescu became further involved in this direction. Debbie said that with the current legislation it had become more difficult for Rescu to stand alone and Rescu had joined with Accuro at Harlow for some projects. The main goal of Rescu at the moment is to build a respite centre within Uttlesford. They have raised money from many social events, Caribbean themed evenings, quiz nights and are now in the happy position that when planning permission is obtained they will be able to build a four bed unit centre to take 16 adults on short stay basis. President Brenda inducted her good friend Mary Clark as a member of the club. The collection at Tesco on Wednesday July 12, raised nearly £250 and a coffee morning at Pam Fox's a further £114.
