Inner Wheel Club

November began well for the Inner Wheel Club when Margaret Joyce and Pam Teed came to join them on November 1, to tell them about Dunmow Disabled Club. This particular charity is one of President Brenda Smith's projects for her year. Pam Teed has been Secretary for nearly 40 years and Margaret attended the very first meeting of the Club in 1954. She was a child at the time but went along accompanied by her mother Mrs Long. It was a Miss Kidman who had the idea of forming a club for the physically handicapped and she asked for volunteers to help. Mrs Long and Mrs Pepper, both of whom were trained nurses, together with Mrs Bishop responded to the challenge, and the Dunmow Physically Handicapped Club began with six members. Interestingly, two of these founder members are still with the club, Mr Alan Whybrow and Mrs Doris Lodge. At the original meetings they played cards and dominoes and chatted. Nowadays there are more than 60 members and the Club is called Dunmow Disabled; there are 11 Meetings a year and eight outings. June Milne reported that all the tickets for the South African Overseas evening on Saturday, November 18, had already been sold. The final and very important item on the agenda was the induction of Anita Williams as an Honorary Member of the club. President Brenda and all the members were very pleased to welcome her into our club, now at a record level of 27 members.
