A MAN who was burned to death 450 years ago because he was a Protestant will be the focus of a talk on Monday.
The Saffron Walden Historical Society will hold a meeting at the Friends Meeting House on Saffron Walden High Street, at 7.45pm.
The Rev Jeremy Collingwood will be the speaker, at a talk entitled "Protestant Martyrs in Essex during the Reign of Queen Mary Tudor".
In Saffron Walden in 1555, John Newman, a craftsman in pewter from Kent, was burned alive for his beliefs in an event recorded on a plaque attached to the town hall.
His death and the deaths of many of the other martyrs who died in Essex around the same time will be discussed.
Everyone is welcome to the meeting, which is free for members. Visitors are asked to make a donation of £1.50.
