THE tension was palpable as A-level results came out today (Thursday), but students from Helena Romanes School need not have worried – they achieved the school’s best ever grades.

This year, 99 per cent of students gained A to E grades, with 72 per cent achieving grades A to C.

As the clock ticked past 10.30am one-by-one students came out of the school doors clutching their treasured results, grins on their faces.

Delighted headteacher Simon Knight paid tribute to the hard work and dedication shown by sixth-form pupils over the last two years. He said that the best results in the school’s history were down to a good set of teachers and a group of pupils who were talented and wanted to learn.

“I am very proud of their achievements,” he said. “These results demonstrate a continued upward trend that is reflected across the school as a whole.”

Many of the top students at the Great Dunmow school achieved the new A* grade which was introduced this year to allow exam-takers to aim even higher.

William Kelsey, from High Easter, managed to get an A* in maths and physics, and an A in chemistry.

Harriet Boyd, from Dunmow, also scored an A* in maths and added A’s in physics and in English literature and language.

Another Dunmow teen, Oliver Banks, achieved an A* in drama alongside an A in English literature and an A in History.

Language lover Oliver Knight, from Dunmow, managed an A* in Spanish as well as A’s in maths and geography.

Rayne student Peter Kukiewicz got an A* in art, an A in English literature and a B in religious education.

Richard Wilson from Dunmow scored A grades in maths, law and general studies, he also added a B in history.

Finally, also amongst the new A* stars at the school was Danielle Bussell from Stebbing whose results included an A* in drama.

Head of sixth form Matthew Fletcher said: “I am once again delighted as for the third year running the A and AS results have improved significantly.

“These results are a reflection of the conscientious and diligent work ethic displayed by the students and their teachers, coupled with the sustained support of their parents.”
