Fire crews were called to the B183 to free the 45-year-old who was then taken away in the Essex air ambulance.
Using hydraulic cutting equipment it took the firemen over one hour to free the driver, whose car finally came to rest in a ditch alongside the road.
Speaking after the rescue, assistant divisional officer Steve Foster said: "It was difficult, the car was severely damaged and the man's arm was trapped between the seat and the crushed side of the vehicle.
