Now in its 31st year, the Hatfield Broad Oak 10K road race was once again a huge success on bank holiday Monday with more than 1,500 runners taking part.

The overall winner of the race, which attracts serious club runners from across the home counties, was Edward Shepherd of Woodford Green with Essex Striders in a time of 31min 13 sec.

He was also winner in the male under-40 category with overall female winner being Samantha Bilbie of the Springfield Striders Running Club in a time of 38min 23sec, who also won the over-35s category.

The first Hatfield Broad Oak resident past the post was Simon Markely in 35min 56sec, with Veronika Kralova being first woman from the village to finish.

Jonathan Hayes, from Bishops Stortford, won the over-60s class, crossing the line in 40min 5sec with Sue Spong from Havering winning the female senior vet race in 45min 35sec.

The race started on the High Street beside the entrance to St Mary’s Church, following a figure of eight around Hatfield Broad Oak before finishing on the village green with crowds of wellwishers cheering the runners over the line.

After the main race, there was the usual one-mile fun run for younger runners and their friends and families, and once again everyone entered into the spirit of the event.

The race is organised by St Mary’s Church of England Primary School PTA with all the proceeds going to the school and local charities and organisations.
