Hard work, plenty of fruit and no suet is the secret to one woman’s long life.

Edith Clarke, who worked at Mr Colliers sweet shop in Market Place for many years, celebrated her 100th birthday in Alan Hasler House, Great Dunmow, last Monday. She enjoyed a party on her big day and she received a greetings card from the Queen.

Edith, who has two children, six grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren, said: “I have very much enjoyed my day. It’s wonderful to have so many of my friends and family here on this special occasion.”

Edith’s sister Jean Lee, 91, added: “Edith is the kindest person I know. She helps everyone and I’m really proud that she’s my sister.”
