A WOMAN from Dunmow who underwent pioneering treatment for a brain tumour 50 years ago celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday.

Friends and family from across the world attended a party at the Dunmow Day Centre to help Eleanor "Nell" Howard celebrate her centenary.

Nell was born in Hendon and had four brothers and a sister. She was a very keen athlete and won many trophies.

She married husband Eric on June 22, 1931 and had they had three children. Since then she has seen her family grow and now has seven grand children, 13 great grand children and is expecting her first great, great grandchild next month.
