The North West Essex and East Herts Preservation Association (NWEEHPA) have celebrated 50 years of deterring Stansted runway expansions.
Having kept skies above Essex free of extra air and noise pollution for half a century, the NWEEHPA marked the anniversary at their Annual General Meeting (AGM) with a large celebration cake.
Held at the weekend, the event was attended by long-standing members, most notably Sue Forsyth, whose father, John Lukies, was one of the two joint chairmen when the committee was set up in 1964.
Since its founding, the association has stopped numerous threats from potential runway expansions, as well as creating the Stop Stansted Expansion Campaign (SSE) in 2002 which has garnered over 7,500 members since.
Peter Sanders, NWEEHPA and SSE chairman, spoke briefly at the event and emphasised the importance of the committee to the community. He added, however, that while threats have so far been quashed, more might follow, with the Airports Commission preparing to release their final report.
