HOURS spent toiling over plants and vegetables paid off for some lucky Saffron Walden gardening enthusiasts last week, as prizes for best-kept allotments were awarded.
Mayor Sarfraz Anjum presented a number of keen green-fingered residents with prizes to reward the hard work they had put in to create their first-class allotments.
Malcolm White, town clerk of Saffron Walden, said: "It was a very successful occasion; everyone who won was extremely pleased to be given gardening vouchers as prizes.
"The mayor went up to both of the allotment plots in the town and had a look around, then made his decision and presented the prizes."
There were winners from each of Saffron Walden's two allotment areas - Little Walden Road and Bird Farm Lane.
Prizes have been presented for the best-kept allotments every year for the last six or seven years.
