Former England rugby international Richard Hill was guest speaker as The Rotary Club of Dunmow raised over £5,000 at its annual Sportsman’s Dinner.
Mr Hill, who was a member of the World Cup winning team in 2003, gave an after dinner speech, followed by a lively question and answer session.
The event was attended by 175 local businessmen and women. And it raised over £5,000 for the club’s charities including a significant award to SportsAid, the national charity for sport which assists young sportsmen and women with grants towards training equipment and career development.
Commencing with a brief introduction from Master of Ceremonies Michael Smith, Rotarian John Bridges said an amusing ‘Grace’ prior to the four-course meal.
After Mr Hill’s speech, Chris Dyer was invited to talk about the roll of SportsAid followed by the auction of a signed rugby shirt which raised £200.
A vote of thanks was given by Neil Young, after which the raffle for a 40-inch TV resulted in raising about £2,000.
