A major accident involving as many as six vehicles has left at least one person trapped in their car and forced the closure of a busy road near Chelmsford.

An Essex Police spokesman said the A1114 Great Baddow bypass has been closed following an accident in the Chelmsofrd-bound lane, which happened at about 7.25am.

Firefighters were called to cut a woman free from the wreckage of one of the vehicles.

It is not yet known how many vehicles were involved and whether anyone has been injured.

Police are advising motorists to avoid the A1114, which is likely to be closed for “several hours” and the A130 northbound, which is congested almost as far as Rettendon Turnpike.
