AN EXUBERANT St George's Day celebration with plenty of singing and dancing was held at Thaxted Church on Friday.

Children from Thaxted Primary School and St Mary's Primary School, Great Dunmow, led the audience in an emotive performance of Gustav Holst's I Vow To Thee, My Country.

Organiser Sybil King, chairman of the Thaxted Lincoln Organ Restoration Project, said: "The children sang beautifully and I don't think there was a dry eye left in the house.

"We raised about £340 for the restoration of the organ, but the main focus was to remind children of the heritage of St George and to enjoy traditional English poetry and music.

"We had a full audience of more than 150 people who were very enthusiastic and enjoyed all the performances."

Also on the bill, the Rickstones Revellers performed a very colourful version of St George and Dragon which provoked a pantomime atmosphere and actor Michael Culkin performed readings from Shakespeare.
