GREAT Dunmow Leisure Centre has been praised by a former town mayor for its work in providing free swimming sessions for the elderly.

Town councillor Frank Silver hailed the recently-introduced Tuesday afternoon sessions as a major step in the right direction for the community. He also described the project as one of kind.

"I am delighted to see the excellent progress that has been made which allows people to be able to use the pool at certain times free of charge," he said.

"I would like to praise all the staff who have contributed so much to arranging the sessions that now take place."

Two months ago local residents were left fuming after free swimming sessions were moved from the usual spot. However, Cllr Silver said that he has received some glowing reports from users.

"The pool is extremely well used by a wide range of people within the community," he said. "The feedback that I have been given from all of the users is extremely good and I am certain that this will continue."

Lyn Fisher, business manager for Leisure Connection Ltd which runs the leisure centre on Parsonage Downs, said that the free swim sessions for the over 60s have become a huge success.

She added: "Swimming can be the perfect addition to a healthy lifestyle. This initiative will encourage residents to visit their local leisure centre and enjoy swimming and exercise as part of their everyday lifestyle."

People wishing to participate in the scheme, which is run in conjunction with Uttlesford District Council, must sign up. If you are over 60 and interested in free swimming, you need to pick up a form at the Great Dunmow Leisure Centre, fill it in and take it back with proof of age.
