FIREFIGHTERS in Dunmow raised £1200 for charity by washing cars on Saturday.

Station officer Keith Crowe said: "We are very pleased with raising this amount of money.

"It's excellent. I'd like to say thank you to everyone who brought their cars along to be washed, and also everyone who helped out at the station to make the event such a success."

There was a constant queue of people waiting for their cars to be washed and many people were very generous in their donations.

"It wasn't uncommon for people to hand over a £5, £10 or £20 note," said Mr Crowe. "It was also enjoyable for the firefighters and children who were washing the cars with more than one water fight breaking out in the afternoon."

All the money raised will be donated to the Fire Service Benevolent Fund and the Burned Children's Club.

- ON SATURDAY two

Dunmow firefighters and two friends will attempt to be the first people to row from Bishop's Stortford to Bristol in Canadian-style canoes.

They hope to raise £20,000 for the same two charities. To support them go to www.dunmowgowest.co.uk or www.justgiving.com/gowest
