For some holiday makers, the only exercise they will do whilst away is a short walk to the pool or to the buffet table at breakfast.

However, a Felsted maths teacher and his wife are embarking on a different sort of get-away all together – they are planning to cycle through 15 countries and cover about 5,000 miles in five months for a charity in Mumbai.

Teacher Joe Andrews, 33, and intellectual property solicitor Verity Ellis, 32, are aiming to raise £2,000 for the charity Magic Bus, which focuses on education and gender equality for children and young people.

The couple are aiming to leave the UK on August 12 and their journey will lead them through western Europe, over the alps and along the Dalmatian Coast through Istanbul, Oman and India before they park their bikes at their final destination in Mumbai, at the Magic Bus headquarters.

When interviewed by Felsted students Sara Faraj Dellipiani and Henry Tietz, Joe said: “After Turkey things are likely to get a little trickier. Our plans will have to be fluid and will depend on visas and the political climate when we get nearer. Iran was top of our list of countries to travel through but it seems very unlikely now.”

Joe also told the pupils: “Being a teacher it was important for me to partner with a charity with an educational focus and with Felsted having such a great link with the Magic Bus it was the obvious choice. I was lucky enough to visit India when I was at school and it had a huge impact on me. We plan to camp as much as possible and hope to be hosted by families and schools along the way.”

Magic Bus Mumbai is one of Felsted’s partner charities.

The charity works with children living in poverty across 22 states of India to move them out of poverty.

Joe and Verity would like to speak to any companies who may be interested in sponsoring them and for anyone who would like to donate log on to: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/byjovebybike to find out more.
