A Felsted man has admitted four charges of possessing indecent pictures of children and possessing extreme pornography.
Michael Ward, 70, pleaded guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court on Tuesday.
Ward, of Stevens Lane, owned or downloaded a total of 1,391 indecent images of children between December 2014 and February of this year.
The final charge of possessing extreme porn related to realistic portrayals of sex acts with animals, including an octopus and an eel.
Ward will be sentenced back at the court later this month.
Judge Charles Gratwicke ordered a pre-sentence report from Probation.
Ward was granted conditional bail. He is banned from unsupervised contact with under-16s and must live at his home in Felsted.
