Fears for Great Dunmow pub as water levels continue to rise

Floods in Great Dunmow are “the worst in years”, it has been claimed – as water levels continue to rise.
Laura Loveday, manager of The Angel and Harp, in Church End, told the Broadcast that three quarters of the pub’s car park is under water and her concerns are growing for the building itself.
She said: “I have only been working here for two years but as far as we are aware it is the worst it has been. The water hasn’t stopped rising since 8am.
“It is just reaching the patio and if it continues it is going to come into the conservatory.”
Emergency plans have been put into action after the heavy overnight rain caused flooding in the town. The River Chelmer has been put on the Environment Agency’s Flood Line warning.
The river has burst its banks at Church End and Great Dunmow Town Council has sent sandbags down to protect homes nearby.
On its website, the Environment Agency states: “River levels are expected to remain high over the next 24 hours. The peak of the river is now near Church End. River levels are likely to continue to rise slowly.
“Properties are at risk in Great Dunmow, Howe Street, Little Waltham and the Rivermead Industrial estate in Chelmsford.
“The Environment Agency is monitoring the situation closely, working alongside partners including the Met Office and local authorities.”
Town clerk Caroline Fuller said: “A flood warning has been issued for Great Dunmow. Our emergency plan has been put into action by issuing sandbags.”
The Braintree Road car park in Great Dunmow is also partially underwater.
The Broadcast also received reports of parts high water levels in Great Bardfield and Finchingfield.
