Great Dunmow businesses, Beresfords Estate Agents and Scrumptious Tearooms, teamed up for two months to raise money for youth projects in the town. Beresfords donated 10p for every cup of tea Scrumptious sold during the period and another £10 for every house valued.

Mayor Jonathan Cadwallader said he was delighted when he was handed a cheque for £1,047.20.

He said: “I am glad the businesses are doing so well! I never expected it would raise this much, it is wonderful.”

The money will be spent on funding youth projects in the town. “I think the idea has really captured the imagination of people in Dunmow,” he told the Broadcast.

“It is nice people are aware that the facilities could be improved.

“I have been doing research and going to schools to find out what the youngsters want – so it is not just an old man’s idea of what they need.”

During the two-month period, Scrumptious sold 4,172 cups of tea and Beresford valued 51 homes.

Owner of Scrumptious Tearooms, on Market Place, Jane Turton said: “It was really interesting for us to see how much tea we actually sell.

“It is also great to support this cause. There is not a lot round here for teenagers so we are more than happy to do what we can to help.”

As part of the campaign Beresfords were also offering to sell someone’s house for free, if they got it valued through the agents during the two month period. The lucky winners were Oliver Marian and Hannah Goudge, from Little Canfield, who were selected at random.

Oliver said: “What a great campaign.

“We are both ecstatic, its such fantastic news, especially as we are on such a tight budget. It has really helped us out.”
