A bonfire spread to a shed, and the wind carried cinders to nearby washing that had been put outside to dry, damaging them.

Fire crews from Wethersfield and Dunmow were on the scene at Mill Close, Great Bardfield, at 2pm on Monday, June 1 until 3.30pm.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has said garden fires can be unpredicable and can spread.

They have issued a plea to anyone with outdoor space to avoid having a bonfire if possible.

In March, firefighters were called to 55 garden fires compared to 28 in the same month in 2018 and 2019.

Braintree District Council has also repeated a safety warning, asking residents not to burn any waste.

A spokesperson said: “Smoke from bonfires is anti-social and can cause problems for neighbours and we will continue to investigate any complaints we receive and will take formal action where appropriate.”
