A DECISION to either banish gypsies or allow them to stay on green belt just outside Little Hallingbury will be made by the secretary of state for communities and local government.

Eric Pickles MP has ‘called in’ the decision because an inquiry held at the end of April 2010 has not heralded a result despite passing a six-week time limit.

Also, a regional space strategy target which sets the amount of gypsy sites a local authority must provide has been scrapped by the new coalition government.

Uttlesford District Council had fought to kick off the travellers after they arrived unannounced last year. It argued that the site, which is next to the M11 motorway, was not suitable for people to live on.

However at the inquiry the group of travellers hit back by declaring they ‘had no where else to go’, they argued that Uttlesford had to make extra provision for them.

No time limit has yet been placed on Mr Pickles’ decision.
