A ROAD was closed for over two hours as fire crews cut a woman out of her smashed up car following a serious collision just outside Great Dunmow.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the smash, on the B1256 at the Little Dunmow turn off, after a blue Volkswagen Passat was in collision with a BMW trapping and injuring a 37-year -old woman.

The crash has led to calls by the public to install traffic calming measures on the notoriously fast stretch of road.

Sue Brown, from Throws Corner, lives virtually opposite where the crash happened. She said: "Why do we have to put up with continued carnage on this road? Looking back I can provide documentation that notifies the county council of the need for traffic calming action to be taken on this road.

"It seems that since the beginning of the year police, firemen and paramedics have been continually scraping vehicles and people off the road.

"Moto GP hopefuls race their motorbikes at 120mph every weekend and Lewis Hamilton fans race their cars here.

"Friday's accident at the junction to Little Dunmow is the second at that spot. I remember my former neighbour had to be cut from his car just 11 months ago, almost to the day. I never remember accidents like this happening when this was the A120 - no-one could travel above 40mph due to the congestion and the tractors."

The accident happened at around 5pm and the female driver was taken to Broomfield Hospital with severe injuries to her pelvis. The 50-year-old male driver of the BMW received treatment for minor injuries at the scene.

Anyone with any information should contact Dunmow road policing unit on 01371 871116.
