IN A BID to relieve High Street congestion a council has come up with a plan to move a bus shelter away from a traffic hotspot.

Dunmow Town Council has been exploring new locations for the High Street bus stop currently located outside Edward's fish and chip shop.

Since the construction of a new junction with traffic lights, concerns have bee rising over the threat of accidents or crashes, and it is hoped that moving the bus stop - to a new location opposite the Boars Head pub - will go some way to relieving those fears.

The council's finance and policy committee initiated the move after consultation with Essex Highways experts.

Chairman John Davey said: "We have decided to relocate it outside the Dunmow club, the only other option was moving it further out of town which would have meant losing more parking spaces and making people walk a fair distance into town.

"The location we have chosen is ideal. It is right in the middle of town, opposite the other town centre stop, and once the White Street entrance has been pedestrianised it will help the flow of traffic.

"The new stop also lines up rather well with the Trevor Hopkins bench as well, so people can sit while they wait."

However, not all councillors are convinced that moving the bus stop will improve traffic flow through the town centre.

Both Cllr Carol James and Cllr Milan Milovanovic expressed safety concerns over the entrance to the Dunmow Club car park.

Cllr Milovanovic added: "Because the new stop will be next to traffic lights it will cause a bottleneck. It will cause even greater congestion than it does now. It would be less obstructive if moved to the front of the One Stop shop."

The move has been agreed though and once in place shoppers, commuters and visitors will be getting off and on buses into and out of town in virtually the same place.
