HOWZAT! A six-a-side cricket tournament helped raise funds for the village’s new pavilion.

Nine teams turned out for the event held at the playing fields on Sunday: Wethersfield, Wethersfield Gentlemen, Finchingfield, Lindsell, Gestingthorpe, Castle Hedingham, Wickham St Paul, BOCA and Christian James VI.

Lewisham-based BOCA visited with a 50-seater coach full of spectators, although the tournament was won by Castle Hedingham, who beat Gestingthorpe in the final.

Prizes were presented by Graham Napier from Essex County Cricket Club.

All proceeds from the day will go towards the Wethersfield Pavilion project, a 470,000 bid to bring new multi-purpose sports facility to the village.

Funding is almost complete and plans for the new pavilion are in place. A speoksman for the Wethersfield playing field committee, the driving force behind the project, told the Broadcast that funding for the project is almost secure. Building work is due to start at the end of the month and is on course to be opened by next spring.
