Gus Barry is starring in BBC 1 drama The Escape Artist, alongside the former Doctor Who star.

The series comes to an end next Tuesday but Gus, who plays Tennant’s son in the gripping drama, still has fond memories of being on set with the actor.

He said: “It was really fun working with David. He was really nice and even gave me some tips.

“At one point when we were not needed on set we started playing the game Temple Rush on his phone.”

Gus is no stranger to big roles after appearing this summer in Harper Lee’s American classic To Kill a Mockingbird at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. He played the role of Jem, and performed alongside the Tony Award-winning American actor Robert Sean Leonard, who played Atticus Finch. Speaking about the performance, he said: “When you finish a show the rush you get from the crowd is overwhelming.”

The Helena Romanes School student caught the acting bug after attending his mum’s acting school, which she runs with her friend, Carrie Cooper.

It was at The Drama Club, at Little Canfield village hall, where his mum, Stephanie Barry, noticed his “natural ability to act”.

From the age of nine Gus, who is signed up with Top Talent Agency, decided he wanted to audition for professional roles.

“I really enjoyed being somebody else and I find it fun being able to experiment with different parts,” he said.

“When I first started going to auditions I did not hear anything back but I knew it was going to be like that and how brutal the industry is. But I wanted to keep going.”
