DUNMOW'S Town mayor has said he "will be lucky to get away with only wobbly legs and a sore behind" after entering himself in the gruelling London to Cambridge bike ride.

Gwynn Davies, elected as the town's first ever welsh mayor in May, will be taking part in the 60-mile cycling marathon to support his chosen charities for his year in office.

He said: "The route is long and I am going to need as much encouragement as possible just to finish the ride.

"I am hoping that my son will accompany me for moral support - as it is also his bike that I will be riding anyway. I am no Lycra lout, but I will be lucky to get away with only wobbly legs and a sore behind."

Cllr Davies will be representing two charities on his ride - Accuro, which helps support children with mental and physical disabilities, and the Alzheimer's Society, which supports elderly people with dementia.

So far he has managed to accumulate a total of £180, but he wants to go much further and raise a minimum of £250 for each charity.

The race starts out in the north of London at Picketts Lock and then winds along adjacent to the route taken by the M11, the finish line is Midsummer Common in Cambridge city centre.

"I have created two web pages on Justgiving.com so people can donate," said Cllr Davies. "I'm also doing the normal paper sponsor forms which can be found in St Mary's church and Foakes House, and I've also got plenty at home."

To donate cash you can visit either of the Mayor's websites at www.justgiving.com/gwynndavies-alzheimers or www.justgiving.com/gwynndavies-accuro. All money raised will be split between both charities equally at the end of the mayor's term in May 2010.
