DUNMOW'S Carnival queen for 2008 was crowned on Friday morning as the previous queen passed on her duties.

Judges from the selection night two weeks ago have deliberated and discussed all the entrants and have revealed that Kimberley Carter will represent Dunmow for the next 12 months.

Embarking on what she believes will be a great adventure Kimberley from Barnston was delighted to finally be crowned carnival queen after entering for the last four years. She said: "This feels really good, I am so happy that I have made it this time because it is the last time I can really enter, I'm hoping to represent Dunmow all over the country."

Kimberley is a Braintree performing arts student with high hopes for her future. The Barnston teenager said: "I really want to make it on the west end in London, I love performing, singing, dancing and acting. It is my ultimate aim, I'm hoping that being carnival queen for the year will raise my profile and help me realise my dreams."

As queen, Kimberley, 18, of Watts Close, Barnston, will be leading the Great Dunmow Carnival procession this summer assisted by her two princesses, Sarah Reeve, 14, of Brookfields, Stebbing, and Amy Dorman, 14, of Maynard Close, Dunmow. She will also be representing Great Dunmow at carnivals and ceremonies across the county.

A happy day for Kimberley was a sad one for departing queen Abigail Tyrell who was sad to be leaving her post after winning the coveted crown last year. She said: "It is really sad for me because I have enjoyed the past 12 months so much, I'm going to really miss it, but I'm sure Kimberley will be a great successor and love it just as much as I did, it really is a great honour to represent the town, I wish her all the best.
