Members of the Dunmow & District Branch of the Royal British Legion joined thousands on a pilgrimage to Belgium to mark 90 years since 11,000 First World War veterans and war widows visited the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres.
Kevin May and George Salter took part in the Great Pilgrimage 90 which and marked 90 years since the original 1928 pilgrimage.
The event, which took place between August 5 and August 9, ended in a march through Ypres to the Menin Gate memorial, where a ceremony was held to commemorate the launch of the Hundred Days Offensive and in remembrance of those who never returned.
At Thiepval, a wreath with a message from Great Dunmow Primary School pupils was laid in memory of Dunmow’s fallen and George and Kevin remembered Private Arthur Greenleaf and Private Frank Willet, two soldiers from Dunmow whose graves were never found and whose names were engraved at Thiepval.
