The deadline is approaching for applications to take part in the Dunmow Flitch Trials which take place this year on Saturday, July 9.
The tradition, mentioned by Geoffrey Chaucer in The Wife of Bath’s Tale dates back to the 1100s.
The historic trials are held every four years and sets out to award a flitch (or side) of bacon to married couples from anywhere in the world, if they can satisfy a judge and jury of six maidens and six bachelors that in “twelvemonth and a day” they have “not wisht themselves unmarried again”.
Couples must have been married for at least a year and a day to qualify. They are cross-examined by barristers, the winners are carried through the town in celebratiion on a special Flitch chair and the entire day is designed for fun and amusement.
Married couples wishing to obtain an application form to be considered for the Trials go to the Flitch Trials website, www.dunmowflitchtrials.co.uk, and download an application form or call the Flitch Judge on 07764 897700. The deadline for applications is Sunday, February 14.
