GREAT Dunmow's top police officer has urged the public to be on their guard after a rise in crime across the South Uttlesford area.

Acting Chief Insp Glen Pavelin said that crimes involving vehicles and sheds have been increasing in Dunmow, Stansted and Hatfield Heath in recent weeks.

He said: "It would appear that these offences are happening overnight. We are asking all residents to be vigilant and assist us in identifying those acting suspiciously.

"Car owners should ensure that no items of value are left in vehicles whilst unattended and in all circumstances they should be locked and alarmed where possible."

He added: "The most recent crimes have come when suspects are entering unlocked cars and stealing items from within. Leaving cars insecure is careless and may affect any insurance claim you may wish to make."

In other cases police have received reports of registration plates being stolen from cars overnight and they are urging the public to report suspicious behaviour.

Garden sheds have also been targeted.

Chief Insp Pavelin said: "Homeowners should consider photographing items of value and record any serial numbers or equipment such as lawn mowers and hedge cutters. People should make every effort to secure outbuildings and where possible give consideration to lighting and alarms.

"My officers are committed to bringing to justice those who commit offences and would relish the opportunity to convict those responsible."

Police also pointed out that if members of the public see something need urgent attention, such as a suspect breaking into a shed or car, then call 999.

Any other behaviour that is deemed non-urgent should be reported to Essex Police on 0300 333 4444.
