A COUNCIL is hoping to save nearly £100,000 by installing solar panels on one of its central buildings.

Braintree District Council will use panels on Causeway House in the town centre to help reduce its carbon emissions by five per cent during 2011/12 and also make a long-term saving.

The project will reduce electricity costs by an estimated £3,700 per year, said Cllr Robert Mitchell, deputy cabinet member for the environment.

“With energy prices set to escalate over the coming years – this is a sound green investment that will bring ever increasing financial returns for the benefit of all our residents,” he added.

The installation of the panels will be met by central government funding and be completed by January 2012. It will cost the council nothing but it is hoped that over the 25-year life span of the panels, £92,500 will be saved.
