THE Co-operative Group Student Journalist of the Year Awards 2008 invites novice news writers in Essex to submit a feature on any of the five topics central to the group's main mission - climate change, social inclusion, tackling crime, food ethics and modern co-operation.

The regional winner will win £1000 and be entered for the overall prize of having their work published in the Independent newspaper.

The competition is open to students of any age studying for a media qualification at university, college of school.

Entries should be between 750 and 1000 words and must be submitted before 5pm on Tuesday April 1 2008.
