With the end of September fast-approaching, the community news section is back.

There has been a lot going on in Dunmow and the surrounding areas this month, as well plenty of events to look forward to.

This October, a Dunmow-based community group will be clearing allotments to make way for fresh planting.

Get Diggin’ works by growing vegetables in other people’s gardens and will meet on October 28 at the Jubilee allotments, in Waldgrooms.

The family-friendly day will also see the cooking up of this season’s produce into delicious soups and stews, plus a pumpkin carving competition.

The only charge will be £1 towards other foods with the dishes.

Bishop’s Stortford will be hosting an unusual exhibition this October – one of woodturning.

The work is brought to the Rhodes Centre by the East Hers Woodturning Association, which covers east Hertfordshire and west Essex.

Many of the objects on display are prize-winning creations by the club’s members.

The event comes ahead of the group’s 25th anniversary next year.

They meet on the third Wednesday of each month at Sawbridgeworth and also invite leading professional woodturners for full-day demonstrations on selected Sundays throughout the year.

Dunmow Rhodes Football Club is celebrating after scoring top new facilities for their young players.

The club wants to say thank you to the Flitch Green Community Trust, which provided the facilities for its U7 to U12 age groups.

The club has said it would particularly like to thank Mick Bott, Emma Nicholls, Steve Crawford, and Steve Ford for their work.

A special exercise class will be held at Foakes Hall, in Dunmow, next week to raise money for research into breast cancer.

The event takes place on September 29 at 7pm and will feature an energetic Zumba class.

Everyone is welcome, whether people are total beginners or have experienced the class before.

Proceeds will go to Together in West Essex, which is a breast cancer clinical trials charity at St Margaret’s Hospital, in Epping.

The Thaxted Centre for the Disabled has undergone a makeover and is inviting people to attend a special open day to mark the occasion.

The event will be held on October 5, running from 11am to 2pm.

As well as having an opportunity to buy some of the centre’s handiwork, visitors can also indulge in some tasty homemade cakes.

The centre is for anyone who is physically disabled and is open two days a week for a variety of craftwork workshops.

It also gives people the chance to meet others living in a similar situation.

On September 17, visitors flocked to the Gardens of Easton Lodge for this year’s Apple Day.

Delighting youngsters, the Uttlesford Beekeepers were in action on the day as were apple pressers making fresh juice.

The East of England Apple and Orchard Project displayed a range of apples grown in the region and took questions from visitors, and there was plenty of apple and honey cake to sample as well.

Next Friday, The Café Beyond the Alley will make its annual appearance to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Dubbed the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, the event will see plenty of tea and cake for people to tuck into, and all in aid of a good cause.

The café will be located at Sweetland’s Ltd, in Stortford Road, in Great Dunmow, between 10am and 12pm.

This is the 17th year the café has been serving tea and cake for Macmillan and this year will also feature a raffle.

Year 7 students at the Helena Romanes School celebrated Roald Dahl Day on September 13 with time in their Learning Zone.

The pupils and their teachers made bunting to hang in up in the centre, with one form declared winner at the end.

The Zone also made dishes from the author’s Revolting Recipes before student Natasha Hall won a copy of Roald Dahl’s autobiography.
