CHILDREN across Essex can look forward to a brighter Christmas thanks to a new appeal from the Salvation Army.
People are being invited to donate toys and gifts to the Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal for children aged from birth to 16.
Major Carol Evans, minister at the Saffron Walden branch of the Salvation Army, said: "We launched our appeal
"There are some families who struggle over the Christmas period and we just want to make sure that all children will have at least one present to open, so they can enjoy a brighter Christmas."
In Uttlesford the Salvation Army has two collection points in Saffron Walden, at the Tourist Information Centre on the Market Square, and at their new church on Abbey Lane.
All gifts should be new and bought in unwrapped so they can be given to the most suitable children in the area.
The Salvation Army's Divisional Commander Major Mike Highton said: "For children and young people we need everything, from soft and educational toys for the very youngest, to CDs, games and toys and accessories for older children.
"And please don't forget the teenagers, particularly the boys who sometimes tend to get left out of such appeals.
"By giving a gift to our Christmas Present Appeal you can make a real difference in someone's life at Christmas."
The Salvation Army in Saffron Walden is also offering a Christmas Day lunch and party for people who would otherwise be alone over the festive period.
"It is a really lovely way to spend Christmas Day," said Mrs Evans. "Nobody needs to be alone over this time."
Anybody interested in attending needs to book by calling Carol Evans on 01799 500339 or 01799 510798. The lunch is held in the Salvation Army Church Hall in Abbey Lane, Saffron Walden and transport can be arranged.
