All you need to know about arranging your car’s MOT and service post lockdown

If you delayed booking your car’s MOT or service during lockdown, now is the time to contact your local garage.
Kevin Wiseman from Perkins Garages in Braintree explains everything you need to know about arranging the checks your car needs as lockdown lifts.
Q: Will my car need an MOT if it ran out before government legislation came in?
During lockdown the government placed a moratorium on MOT tests and car services. They allowed a six-month extension on due MOTs and 3 months on cars due for servicing.
If your car was due for its service back in March, we’re now approaching the deadline of the extension. You need to get in touch with your local garage to get it booked in as soon as possible.
If your car’s MOT ran out before the Government suspended testing it needs to be tested before being used on the road again. Without an up to date MOT you could be fined if there’s an issue with your car or you could lose your warranty. This may affect the value of your car and prevent your warranty from covering any repairs or maintenance your car needs.
Q: Is it safe to visit MOT centres and garages?
We resumed regular business hours on June 1 though we’re currently offering car servicing and MOTs by appointment only. Call or email us to book a time.
We’re doing all we can to ensure the safety of our customers and staff. We’ve put protective screens in place and set up sanitising stations.
We’re limiting contact made with your car. Only one technician will work on it when you bring it in. They’re equipped with full PPE and we’ll clean and sanitise your car before we return it to you.
Q: Will my car need servicing after lockdown?
Though you might not have driven much over the last two months, it’s important to check that your car is safe to drive.
Unused vehicles may have a flat battery, fuel that’s evaporated and low-pressure tyres. Each of these things will affect your car’s performance and safety when you come to use it again.
Booking your car in for service will help give you peace of mind. We’ll run all the necessary checks to ensure your car is safe for you and your family to use.
We’ll do a thorough inspection of the engine, inflate your tyres and top up your transmission fluid. We’ll perform an oil change if it’s needed, check the exhaust and filter system and look over your windscreen and wipers.
It’s important to make sure there are no tears on your wiper blades as this will prevent them from cleaning your windscreen correctly and impair your vision when driving.
You should have these things checked before booking your MOT to prevent your car from failing.
Q: When is it best to book my MOT or service?
As soon as you can. We’re already busy with requests from people that have had to delay their MOTs or services during the lockdown. You don’t want to leave it too late.
