AS IF by magic the Flitch Trials appear to be trying to raise its own profile ahead of the big day on July 12.
Retiring bus driver, Richard Wright, 68, of Cranham Road, Broxted, was clearing out his attic and putting items in his shed when something caught his eye.
To his surprise in a wicker basket he found a programme and photograph of the Flitch Trials dating back to nearly 96 years ago.
He said: "I couldn't believe it, I had been reading about the trials in the Broadcast for the past few weeks, and then suddenly I found the picture and book with it."
Although the picture isn't officially dated it was found lying next to the Flitch programme which is clearly dated 1912.
The trials were scheduled for August 5 and were scheduled to take place on parsonage meadows, now home to Helena Romanes School, and the programme price? Just three pence.
Mr Wright said: "It is amazing that the articles are still in such great condition, I thought it was particularly interesting that on page 18 of the programme is a
train timetable for Great Dunmow's old station."
The programme contains adverts from some of Dunmow's oldest institutions, including a large piece on the back page profiling The Dunmow Flitch Bacon Co. Ltd, which sadly no longer exists in the town.
The picture is an intriguing insight into the Flitch Trials, and how actually, not much has changed in the long running tradition.
Clearly visible are all the members involved in court proceedings, from judge to jury, all under a big tent with the audience watching on.
