THE M11 motorway was closed in both directions for seven hours on Sunday morning following a five-vehicle collision, including a van towing fast food trailer.

The incident happened when the vehicles crossed over both the northbound and the southbound carriageway between junction nine at Saffron Walden and junction eight at Stansted Airport at around 4.25am.

A white van, also involved in the collision, caught fire and crews took 40 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Two people received treatment from ambulance crews, and one was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow.

The motorway opened seven hours later at 12.30pm when the hard shoulder was opened for use.
