The annual Big Draw day at Dunmow Library on Saturday, October 14 with artists Paul Taylor and Anne Schwegmann-Fielding, was a big hit with families.

Anne and Paul encouraged children to turn themselves into cartoon heroes and heroines and create their own new imaginary Dundoodle, a new breed of eco superheroes for Dunmow.

The Mayor of Dunmow Councillor Danielle Frost and her family took part in the day along with 150 other children, parents and grandparents.

Organiser Catherine Mummery said: “It was wonderful to see the library so full of families drawing and being creative.

“This event would not have been possible without the help of the library staff and a big thank you goes to the Dunmow Round Table and Arts Council England for the funding that enabled the day to take place.”

Anne said: “It was great seeing families experimenting with different drawing techniques with help from Creative Dundoodles including Inspector Imagination and Colonel Colour before creating their own Dundoodle badge. Children and parents were so engrossed and enthusiastic that the day was a delight.”

Paul Taylor said: “There is only so much planning you can do for an event like this, ultimately it’s about the enthusiasm and creativity of the participants. It was so inspirational to see children work on drawings that were much bigger than them, with such fearlessness and energy.”

The event, part of the International Big Draw Festival, also saw the launch of the Drawing In Dunmow Children’s Art Competition for ages five to 14. It’s free to enter. Youngsters are invited to design and draw or make their own Dundoodle super hero/heroine and hand in their artwork to the Dunmow Library by November 17.
