A MELODIC chime will mark the start of a new day at Finchingfield Primary School after its 19th century bell was restored to its former glory.

The 70lb bell, which dates back to 1854, was taken down for repairs in April 2004 after its metal brackets were found to be unsafe.

But thanks to fundraising and a grant from the Essex Heritage Trust, the £3000 needed to restore the 14-inch diameter bell was secured and it is now back at the top of the school's tower.

Headteacher Paula Hagan said: "It's lovely to see the original bell back in its rightful place.

"It features on the school logo and the tower looked so empty while it was being repaired. "Now we plan to ring it every morning to mark the start of the school day.

"The restoration has made the bell's chime more melodic."

The bell has been reinstated in time for the school's 150th anniversary celebrations, which begin on Monday, October 16.
