THERE were cowboys, Indians, and even saloon girls as Takeley Community Group held a Wild West themed summer barbecue in the Silver Jubilee Hall's field on Saturday.

Children were kept entertained with games, bouncy castles and western-themed crafts including making warrior headdresses.

Dave Woods, chairman of TCG, wore a Stetson hat and waistcoat for the occasion and put his cooking skills to the test at the barbecue, handing out free hamburgers.

He said: "This was a real community effort and I'm delighted everyone had such a good time. It cost £10 per adult and all children came in for free. Once in, all entertainment and food was free."

Family games, including a sack race, proved to be a big hit and a performance by Studs and Stars Linedancing added an extra cowboy touch.

"The benefits of events like this to the community are immeasurable for building links and also to show the children how to do things for others," said Mr Woods.

"We've been able to put it on because of sponsorship from local companies and the parish council. I'd like to thank everyone who gave their time and donated the things that made the day such a success."

Planning for the next TCG event is already in progress. It will be a children's Halloween party on October 27 at the Silver Jubilee Hall.
