A CHARITY appeal in aid of prisoners of conscience exceeded its target when 500 Christmas cards were sent out instead of the predicted 450.
Amnesty International, the human rights organisation, invited Saffron Walden people to send cards to individual prisoners with a personal message from the sender, and these events were held at St Mary's Church as well as Saffron Walden County High School and Friends School.
Among those prisoners sent cards were gospel singer Helen Behane, who has been jailed in Eritrea because she belongs to a minority Christian church, and Gurbandurdy Durdykuliev, 61, who has been confined in a psychiatric hospital in Turkmenistan for trying to organise a protest against the government's policies.
