After much deliberation, the greatest minds in The Reporter office have compiled their favourite 50 moments from 2006. So, starting in reverse order...

50 HARD WORK

Kind volunteers from the Dunmow Broadcast area were rewarded for their hard work at Uttlesford District Council's annual Community Achievement Awards (March 2). David Wolfe and Nicole Wilson from Dunmow, Peter and Dol McGuinness of Stebbing and Bryan and Sue Dormer from Barnston all received awards. In Hatfield Broad Oak Des and Wendy Brandham, Daphne Padfield and Edna Hlls were recognised as well as David and Janet Clayden from Leaden Roding.

49 BRONZE BABES

Dunmow-based hockey players, Chloe Rogers and Lisa Wooding, were celebrating after winning bronze medals at the CommonWealth Games in Australia (March 30). The Chelmsford Ladies players were both involved in a tense penalty shoot-out with New Zealand and went on to win a gold medal with India taking silver. They then represented England in the Hockey World Cup and finished seventh, beating Olympic champions, Germany (October 12).

48 KARATE KID

Thaxted teen, Joanne Bonner, was celebrating after finishing third in the Pilatus Cup in Kriens, Switzerland (April 6). The 16-year-old member of Dunmow Kyokushinkai Karate Club took part in the knockdown competition with high hopes and one eye on making the England squad for the World Championships.

47 GOLDEN RADIO

BBC Essex Radio reporter Oliver Rogers won a gold trophy at a national awards ceremony for his work with a hospital radio station (April 6). Barnston-born Oliver won the award in the Best Radio News category at the National Hospital Radio Awards in Blackpool. Oliver has worked with Hospital Radio Chelmsford, which also won the gold trophy in the National Hospital Radio Station of the Year award.

46 GARDEN GLORY

The Gardens of Easton Lodge in Little Easton received a national award in recognition of a project to encourage people to draw (April 6). The Gardens won the Inspired by Heritage award from the Drawing on Memories Big Draw, a national event which encourages people to draw. The Little Easton project were presented with the award and £500 award money at a ceremony hosted by the Campaign for Drawing.

45 TOWN LINKS

Dunmow mayor David Beedle and his wife Pat returned from a trip to France where they were the guests of Yves Tavernier, Dunmow mayor's twin town, Dourdan (April 13). Mr Beedle took leaflets about Dunmow and the surrounding area and copies of the Dunmow Broadcast to twinning stall at the Foire Ventose a spring holiday held 15 days before Easter.

44 NEW HEIGHTS

A Stebbing woman was celebrating after reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for an international development charity (April 20). Stephanie Taylor was part of a Voluntary Service Overseas team which raised funds for the Lea Toto project. The project provides health, education and social services for Kenyan children with HIV and their families.

43 SAD GOODBYE

The Broadcast office was sad to see veteran reporter, Jenny Oliveira, close her notebook for the last time to enjoy her retirement (April 27). Jenny joined the Reporter 16 years ago before moving to the Dunmow Broadcast in 1995. Over the years the support of the community during various campaigns amazed Jenny. She said: "I'll never forget the generosity of Broadcast readers whenever I ran a Christmas appeal."

42 MARATHON MAN

Thaxted teenager Stuart Fallas helped raise hundreds for charity after finishing ninth in the London mini-marathon and fourth in his age group (April 27). The 15-year-old who attends the Helena Romanes School raised more than £800 for Dreamflight which rewards disabled children or those who've had bad experiences. Stuart said: "It was a great experience with everyone cheering and clapping along the route."

41 CHESS CHAMPS

Four local schools shared first prize in the 2006 Essex Schools Chess Tournament at St Mary's Primary School in Great Dunmow (May 4). Dame Bradbury's, St Thomas More and the Friends School of Saffron Walden along with the Roding School of Leaden Roding were all winners at the event. More than 100 pupils from 13 schools took part in the competition.
