Olympic silver medallist Roger Black gave a stunned Valeria Dunn a retirement present she will never forget at Henham and Ugley Primary School's sports day (July 20). The deputy headteacher, who has worked at the school for almost 30 years, retired at the end of term having started working at the primary school in 1977.

19 FOUNTAIN FREE

The Great Bardfield Fountain started flowing for the first time in six months thanks to maintenance work carried out by the parish council (July 20).The fountain stopped working in January after the pipe which connected it to the nearby spring, became blocked.

18 FEELING PEAKY

Eight members of Great Dunmow Round Table took part in the Three Peaks Challenge to raise £2,500 for charity (July 27). The group climbed Ben Nevis, Mount Snowdon and Scarfell Pike in 23 hours. The money raised went to the Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity, National Deaf Children's Society and The Noonans Syndrome Charity.

17 THE ESSEX WAY

Four runners ran 84 miles in two days to raise money for a Little Dunmow fitness centre (August 17). Graham Baker, Prunella Hayhow, Howard Jardine and Karen Rowntree ran from Epping to Harwich along the Essex Way to raise funds for the Grange Farm Fitness Centre. Around £2000 was raised for new equipment.

16 AFRICAN TREK Two friends who met at Takely Primary School helped raise £100,000 for the West Essex charity, Together, by trekking up Mount Kilimanjiro (August 17). Simone White and Karen Thompson got 20 people together for a 10-day trek up the mountain in Tanzania. All money raised will go to breast cancer research.

15 BACK IN TOWN

Former European and Commonwealth javelin champion, Steve Backley, was one of the supporters of the Great South Walk, which took place in Hatfield Forest and Takeley (August 24). The eight-mile walk in aid of British Heart Foundation (BHF) was run in conjunction with Tesco.

14 CHARITY JAZZ

Hundreds of pounds were raised from two concerts featuring stars of the West End musicals and legendary jazz musician Kenny Ball in Little Bardfield (August 31). Around 200 people were treated to songs from Oliver, Grease and West Side Story and Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen raising £500 for the St Katherine's Church restoration fund. Organiser Alan Goldsmith said: "They were truly fabulous events."

13 SLIMMING STAR

A woman from Takeley was named Slimming World's Woman of the Year after going from a size 38 to a size18 in just three years

(October 5). Yilly Usta who attended classes in Dunmow, was pampered by local businesses as a reward for her achievements.

12 PUB MAKEOVER

A historic pub in Thaxted reopened after a £300,000 makeover (October 19). The Swan Hotel was closed for three weeks while it was refurbished thanks to investment from owners, Greene King.

11 TOWN HONOURS

Two pensioners and a dance troupe were given honours for their contribution to Dunmow (October 26). Peggy Baines, Norman Billett and the Dunmow Majorettes all received honours in the Great Dunmow Town Awards 2006. Mrs Baines and Mr Billet both won awards for their work within Dunmow.
