More than 300 runners didn't let the heavy rain get their spirits down as they took part in the annual Watford 10k and 1k Fun Run on May Day.

The event, operating for more than 20 years, was held in support of Watford Mencap, a charity serving individuals with learning disabilities in the area.

Despite challenging weather, the inclusive event welcomed a mix of participants: seasoned runners, beginners, and families.

In a sight fitting for the big screen as the participants ran through the stunning Whippendell Woods, glowing with bluebells, the run was aptly sponsored by Warner Bros Studios Leavesden.

The youngest participant in the 1k Fun Run was just two years old, while the oldest competitor, aged 77, took on the 10k run.

Local running clubs including WBSL Road Runners, Watford Joggers, Watford Harriers, and Runner Beans Club also participated.

Adding to the festive spirit was an energetic warm-up session led by Bushey Grove Leisure Centre before the runners took to the course.

The streets were abuzz with cheers from volunteer marshals and spectators as those taking part took on the route.

Chris Wrighton was the fastest, completing the 10k in an impressive 36 minutes and 51 seconds.

Runners had another cause for cheer at the finish line where mayor Peter Taylor and Watford MP Dean Russell, alongside Watford Mencap service users, presented them with unique medals.

Fundraising efforts are still in progress, but the charity hopes to add more than £12,000 to the coffers for essential services.

Michelle Hamilton, the fundraising manager at Watford Mencap, said: "The Watford 10k is such a special event.

"We’re so grateful to all of our dedicated runners, supporters, volunteers and sponsors.

"The local community are wonderful at helping us to raise vital funds so that we can provide personalised support for people with learning disabilities across South West Hertfordshire."

Watford Mencap serves around 800 children and adults with learning disabilities through a host of services.

These include but are not confined to residential homes, free advice and information, cafés in the library, learning and leisure courses, and kids’ clubs and activities.

For those willing to contribute, donations can be made online through the charity’s JustGiving page, via justgiving.com/campaign/watford10k2024.

Monies raised will enhance lives and make a discernible impact on those who need it most.
