Visitors and residents can find out about available activities in their area at the new Dunmow Showcase.

The free event was started by John and Helen Wright, and will showcase the town's community, social and specific interest activities.

John and Helen previously won the Dunmow Flitch Trials in 2012 - bringing home the side of bacon, or 'flitch', after proving their love in front of a jury.

Since winning the trials the couple has worked voluntarily for the community. During lockdown they set up 'Care For Your Neighbours', which expanded to 60 volunteers helping more than 150 vulnerable residents with shopping and picking up medication.

They have wanted to set up the showcase since before the pandemic, and have organised the event in collaboration with United in Kind coach for Uttlesford Christine Chester and Find Your Active community coordinator Mirka Marri.

The showcase aims to signpost activities available to people in the ever-expanding Dunmow area, as well as fostering a sense of community - particularly among newcomers.

John and Helen said: "This will give people an opportunity to join in anything that they may be interested in. This could be either as a potential member, volunteer, or any other capacity.

"With the growing development we want to welcome the newcomers into Dunmow as well.

"There will be a wide range of age groups to present something for everybody.

"This will hopefully enable people to get more involved in the community which will be a benefit to us all."

The showcase takes place in the building and grounds of St Mary's Church, Dunmow from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, April 27.

There will be exhibitions, presentations, performances, activities and free refreshments on offer.

Christine Chester added: "It is hoped that the event will help people become a greater part of their local community in this fast growing town.

"There are many groups and organisations in Dunmow but these are not widely known about, particularly by new residents.

"This is an event by the community and for the community."
