A Dunmow-based trail hunt has been issued a Community Protection Notice (CPN) in relation to ongoing allegations of antisocial behaviour.

The Puckeridge and Essex Union Hunt was formerly known as The Puckeridge Hunt until it merged with the Essex Farmers and Union Hunt.

The notice was issued today (Wednesday, July 26) following an investigation from Herts police's Rural Operational Support Team (ROST).

A previous Community Protection Warning (CPW) was issued in 2022 after multiple reports of antisocial behaviour from members of the group.

The Essex Hunt was also issued a CPW in 2022 by Essex Police. However the behaviour continued, leading rural officers to seek a full CPN.

The CPN sets out a list of 16 actions that the hunt will be expected to comply with in order to manage the behaviour and actions of its members, and to curtail the antisocial behaviour.

If the conditions are not met, or there are further incidents of antisocial behaviour (ASB) related to the group, the hunt could face a court summons.

A spokesperson for the ROST, said: "Attempts have been to engage with the hunt and put a stop to the numerous reports of ASB.

"Unfortunately, the behaviour has continued and we were left with no choice but to seek this order.

"I hope this provides some reassurance to those who have been affected by their actions.

"If you are a victim of ASB from the hunt members, staff or its supporters then you are encouraged to please report this to police as soon as possible."

Conditions of the CPN include:

  • Creating a map of all trails, which must be recorded on video at every hunt or training event - to be provided within 48 hours of police request.
  • Suspending the hunt and recalling the dogs if control of dogs is lost.
  • Ensuring no member of the hunt trespasses on private land or common/public land without permission.
  • Gaining prior written permission from landowners to use land for trail hunting, and carrying a copy of the permission.
  • Not to block or cause disruption to the highway.
  • Ensuring no member of the hunt abuses members of the public or landowners.
