Saffron Walden Rotary Club is holding a collection for basic food, household items, toiletries and health supplies to donate to Ukraine.

The collection will take place from 9am to 1pm on Saturday, July 15, on Saffron Walden Common next to the car park.

Families in Ukraine are losing their homes and possessions, and are often without a breadwinner.

This creates a need for everyday food items, shoes, clothes - especially underwear, toiletries and sanitary towels.

Items are also being collected for children including nappies, colouring books and school supplies.

Rotarian project leader John Tapscott said: "The aid which the Rotary Club has been collecting over the last year is delivered to the Felsted-based charity UK-Aid who in turn takes it to distribution centres in Moldova and Ukraine for the benefit of refugee and dispossessed families in those countries.

"Many hundreds of families have been helped, although many more are still in need."

Cash donations to help with transportation costs are also accepted, and can be made at the collection point by cash or credit card.

John added: "Given the tremendous support received from local people over the last year we are hopeful that we will get a good response again."
